Design becomes most meaningful when it represents a community.
As T-Shirt Co-Chair for Chi Omega, I was responsible for designing merchandise for major chapter events including Bid Day, Ladies Weekend, Family Weekend, Work Week, Semi-Formal, and a general merchandise drop. Working closely with my co-chair and our marketing team, I developed original concepts and visuals for each event. The designs balanced the event’s theme with Chi Omega’s larger brand identity, all while still reflecting the personality of our KU chapter.
This role strengthened my ability to design for a large audience while navigating real production timelines. Because merchandise had to be ordered weeks in advance, and often included custom details such as embroidery, sleeve prints, and specialty stitching, I learned to plan strategically around manufacturing constraints. Each release also needed to meet minimum order quantities, which made it both exciting and nerve-racking to see whether the chapter would connect with the designs.
Seeing members of my sorority wear the shirts and sweatshirts throughout the year was incredibly rewarding. I feel very honored to have represented my chapter in this very physical, visual way and to contribute my talents positively to our reputation. In many ways, the role reflected Chi Omega’s motto, “Womanly Always, Discouraged Never,” reminding me to approach each design with pride, resilience, and a commitment to representing the community well.
